You and I both know I'm probably not going to become rich or famous being a handyman. But I love what I do, so I am fond of every job I do. I believe in giving an honest day's work, for an honest day's pay. But actions can be performed by anyone to get a task done, it's the feeling behind the actions that make a job memorable and outstanding. let me tell a story...
I had a call from a lady wanting a sun shade installed over her patio area to keep her prize flowers from getting sunburnt. when I got there she said I probably don't want the job she had already talked to two handymen and she couldn't afford them. I told her she called the right guy then because I'm a one man show and my prices were the lowest around. so I took a look at what she wanted done, figured in my discounts for members at wholesalers. looked at how well the plants were maintained and full of life even though the pots were things that were probably scavenged from things nobody else wanted or made by grandchildren and displayed proudly. $150.00 yep gonna cost you 150. her face lit up and told me she could manage that, so I got to work. I went and picked up the materials, brought them back and started to erect a framework to stretch the shade screen over, it was pretty hot out so she offered me a glass of iced tea and started to talk to me as I worked. Yup I was right the flowerpots in the front were made by grandchildren and given to her as gifts. (easy to spot I guess because I've got an ashtray from a niece)by the time I had finished, over 6hrs. had flown by but it only seemed like two. I let her know I had to call the office to process her payment of $150.00 but she interrupted me and said to make it $175.00 I deserved a tip. so I called it in at 175. while I waited I went to the truck and got her receipt for her materials, one of my business cards and put them inside one of my fliers where I wrote "kids like ice cream" after letting her know her payment of 175 was good I handed her the papers got in my truck and drove away as I looked in my rear view mirror I saw her open the papers and start to cry, I'm sure it was because her materials receipt read $196.73.
