How many of you have seen these dark streaks on a roof and assumed it was time for a replacement?

Most people do. But that streaking is not age and it is not damage. It is a living organism called Gloeocapsa Magma, a type of algae that forms when airborne spores land on your shingles and begin to feed on the limestone filler inside them. As it spreads it creates that dark, almost black streaking pattern you see across the surface. It holds moisture against the shingle, accelerates deterioration over time, and makes a roof look far older than it actually is.

Here is why that matters beyond just curb appeal.

Luke Miller is a realtor who reached out to me about a property in Saint Charles, Minnesota. The family he was representing had a 50 year old slate roof that looked like it was done. Instead of replacing it, Luke wanted to see if we could restore it first.

Slate is a completely different animal compared to asphalt or cedar. This was not a simple soft wash and rinse. We applied a high concentration of sodium hypochlorite, scrubbed the entire surface intensely to make sure we broke through all the buildup, let it dwell, and then rinsed it aggressively. It took real effort to get this roof to where it needed to be.
