The work of education is to help students build a better world 04/30/2024

The following is quoted from the above article:

“The VCU branch of the United Campus Workers of Virginia union (UCWVA-VCU), representing VCU faculty and staff, released a lengthy statement largely condemning the use of police intervention Monday evening.

“There can be no justification for such an unmitigated display of brutality against students exercising their rights to free speech on their own campus,” the statement reads. “The encampment built by VCU students today was an act of love, bravery, and solidarity. They spoke out for the humanity of others, only to see their school rob them of their own.”

The union went on to say that they believe the use of riot gear, tear gas, pepper spray and other weapons on students is unjustifiable.

“Without students, there can be no university,” the statement reads. “VCU students acted tonight in concert with students across the country who are standing up against the genocide unfolding before our eyes in Gaza.”

My better half, Katherine, had the opportunity to photograph and catalog these six pieces of art.

Reading the biographies of the four represented artists is truly incredible.

Take a few minutes, look them up, admire the pictures, and appreciate the art.

Jean Garst is a remarkable woman. Generous and joyful, quite particular and meticulous, she possesses an innate sense of order. The collection that she has chosen to share reflects her and her family’s appreciation of quality craftsmanship, history & practicality. Highly involved in her community and Green Hill Church of the Brethren, many items have been locally crafted by artisans of all types. I can think of no one else who could set a table for SIXTEEN people with matching china!

A number of pieces are generational from both her family, as well as her late husband, Wayne Garst, of Garst Brothers Dairy. Memorabilia from the Dairy and Poultry Farm have been kept in a spectacular display case.

Gold trimmed Christmas Ribbons by Meiwa (once again, service for 16!), as well as many festive and tasteful holiday decorations. Outstanding furniture including a Hunzinger style platform rocker; Aspen Trestle Table (9-½ feet long with 2 leaves installed); early 1900’s Imperial Tea cart; rare Regency mahogany scroll arm klismos chairs; beautiful and large hand knotted rug; vintage Fenton glass; Pristine MCM Lenox Wyndcrest china; Waterford and Princess House crystal; Vintage Pyrex & Corning Ware; Nippon hot chocolate set; global teacup collection; gorgeous glassware; Amish & locally made quilts; outstanding collection of sheet music; beautiful lace & crocheted table linens and doilies; vintage bakelite vanity set; Longaberger baskets; multiple P. Buckley Moss signed prints and more.

Wayne’s workshop holds countless treasures including pristine industrial shelving, a large locking Kobalt cabinet, vintage steel cabinets and drawers, Porter-Cable router & an extensive collection of accessories; Craftsman bandsaw/sander, two bench grinders, Walker-Turner drill press, vast collections of prep and finishing tools, hand tools and accessories, vintage Snap-On, Disston saw, electrical supplies for any job, like new battery powered Greenworks telescoping hedge trimmer, Stihl blower, and much more.
