How often do you wonder if there is a better way to solve a business problem? At we challenge ourselves with that question daily.
In March of 2022, Tableau adjusted how Tableau Online authenticates to some common external data sources (such as Google Sheets and Salesforce). Affected data sources needed to be reauthenticated, or access would be interrupted.
Our client had hundreds of data sources across dozens of projects. We needed to find all data sources that would be affected. What was the best approach to finding these soon-to-be stale data sources? The native GraphiQL query tool!

We accessed the query tool by signing into Tableau Online and replacing everything after .com in the URL with /metadata/graphiql/
We then wrote a simple statement to return the data sources that needed to be reauthenticated:

}
}
This query returned the subset of data sources that were subsequently fixed and republished. This daunting project took us less than a day to accomplish!
