I feel like natural light is my best friend. I rarely take photos using a flash even indoors. One way to reduce shadows is with diffused light. Anything between the light source and your subject can diffuse the light and soften the scene. Outdoors an overcast day or a misty morning provide even light and beautiful subtle contrast.
