Another important reminder when you’re traveling abroad: always decline the ATM’s offer to convert to your home currency.

One of my clients just showed me the difference on a €400 withdrawal in Greece:

With Schwab: their account was debited $470.34 (Schwab calculated the exchange rate).

With the ATM’s conversion: it would have been $519.99.

That’s a $49.65 difference — an 11% surcharge — just for letting the ATM “help” you convert.

👉 Lesson learned: Always choose to be charged in the local currency, NOT your home currency.
