This post is in jest but it's absolutely true sometimes especially when working with a young horse! If one the young ones that I'm riding decides they don't want to go forward I do this exactly, we stand there for a min until they get bored and decided they want to go forward. The young ones also need a moment to process pressure, and it's a balance of how much pressure is too much at times. Anyways some of this even though its meant to be a joke is an effective method of training especially with young/green horses! 🤣
How to out-mare your mare.
So you own a mare. Commiserations. You thought you were getting a nice weekend hobby; what you actually acquired is a half tonne of bad decision with legs and a hormone imbalance. Now you must perfect the ancient and sacred art of out-maring your mare.
1. If she is stubborn, you must become monumentally stubborn. She doesn’t want to load and just stands at the bottom of the ramp? Excellent. Cancel your plans. Time is now a social construct. You have evolved beyond clocks. You will stand there with the unblinking resolve of a toddler told to leave Disneyland. You live here now. The lorry is your address. Amazon parcels will be delivered to the ramp.
2. She’s spotted something spooky coming in from the field and refuses to face the right way? Absolutely fine. Who needs forward motion anyway? You will simply reverse her the entire way to the yard. The ENTIRE way.
3. She threatens you when you go near her feed? Bold of her to assume it was ever hers. That is your dinner now. You grew it. You harvested it. You invented fibre. You will stand there next to the feed while maintaining aggressive eye contact until she rethinks her life choices.
4. She plants her feet and simply… stops… mid-hack for no reason whatsoever? Cool cool. You too will stop. Do not move. Do not speak. Become a statue. Birds may land on you. Seasons may change. Historians will debate what you were waiting for. Eventually she will walk on because this is boring now and she hates that more than anything.
Remember, you cannot win against a mare. This is not a battle. This is a long-term psychological chess match against a creature powered entirely by spite, stubbornness and hormones. Your goal is not victory — it is to become so equally unhinged that she looks at you and thinks, “absolutely not,” and decides to cooperate for her own mental health.
(Please be aware this is a joke and in no way a training guide!!)

Here's at SG Eventing we've decided that horses are just too expensive in this economy. So we're selling them all off and taking up hobby horse competition instead. 🤣
