He oversaw the dramatic expansion of the Office of Community Health and Safety, transforming it from an idea on paper into a team of social workers who respond alongside police to support individuals in crisis. These efforts closed unsafe encampments, connected vulnerable residents with housing, and ensured they were treated with respect and dignity. Under his leadership, Pittsburgh partnered with the Steelers and other stakeholders to bring the NFL Draft to the city, generating excitement and economic opportunity. His administration also made significant strides in public safety, contributing to a major reduction in crime, especially among young people, and with no homicides among youth ages 13-17 in 2024. He was also instrumental in bringing private and public entities together to secure $600 million to revitalize Downtown and reinvigorated the Youth Commission to give young people a meaningful voice in local government. A deeply committed housing advocate who lived in public housing as a child, Mayor Gainey secured the first-ever Affordable Housing Bond investment in the city’s history and dedicated millions of the pandemic recovery funds allocated to the city to the creation and preservation of affordable housing. Ed Gainey married the lovely Michelle Gainey, and together they raised three wonderful children: Mariah Peoples, Alexa Gainey, and Darius Gainey.
