Ashlee Raye
My name is Ashlee, and I'm a former professional athlete turned Executive Mentor. I have worked in Corporate America for over 13 years, and have 12 years of executive experience leading People & Business Operations. I started my career in leadership at the age of 24 as an Executive Director and growth throughout my career led me to be a Senior Executive Director, a Director of People & Operations,
I Quit Code Switching!
For many years I would wake up as 1 Ashlee and walk into work as another Ashlee. Even though for most of my life I had been told “You’re not that black” or “I don’t really see you as black”, I still felt the need to hide my blackness and tone down who I am.
I’ve even gone so far as to pretend I like country music to fit in, knowing good and well I truly cannot stand country music! I’m a Hip Hop & R&B music lover to my core.
Many black people know this act of having to operate as 2 different people as “Code Switching”, and we do it for 2 reasons:
🔺To make white people at work feel safe
🔺To make white people at work feel comfortable
Blackness is often seen as both a threat and unprofessional in workspaces, and code switching is meant to keep us "safe".
Let me be the one to tell you... it's psychologically damaging!
It wasn’t until 2020 when the country was in a necessary uproar about the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor that I realized I could no longer wake up and go to work as 2 different people.
There was a week in June last year where I felt this immense feeling of depression trying to fully show up at work while simultaneously trying to hide my emotions and fear. The weight I felt was intense and heavy.
I made a decision that my personal values and the values of companies I work for have to align moving forward. In addition, I could also no longer hide my Passion & Purpose of:
✅ Creating true, non-performative, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the workplace
✅ Increasing the representation of women in leadership by coaching on Mindset, Career Growth, and Wealth Building
✅ Closing pay wage gaps that so severely affect women and black and brown people
My years of leadership experience + the trauma of continuously being the token black woman on Leadership teams over the years has lead me here!
I'm excited to share more of myself, my thoughts, and my experiences on this platform with you all!
Along with many of you, I will be part of the change I want to see + be a voice for those who look like me.
Moving forward, I encourage every black person and person of color to do the following:
💎 Show up boldly and authentically as yourself
💎 Only work in spaces that share your personal values
💎 Only work in spaces that celebrate you, and leave spaces that merely tolerate you
Thanks for reading. These words feel a lot like freedom 😊
If this spoke to you today, drop a 🙌🏾 in the comments & let's connect!
DM me the word “Growth” to learn how you can walk in confidence & authenticity so that you can get promoted & paid in 2022.
Let’s do this.
Sending Love & Light ✨
