🌵 Happy 114th Birthday, Arizona! 🌵From Story Monster & Friends
On February 14, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state — bold, resilient, and full of unforgettable stories.
During Arizona’s Centennial year in 2012, Arizona Way Out West & Witty was honored as ONEBOOKAZ for Kids (2012) — a statewide recognition celebrating books that reflect the spirit and history of the Grand Canyon State.
Written by Conrad J. Storad and Lynda Exley and illustrated by Michael Hagelberg, this engaging nonfiction title has entertained and educated young readers with humorous history, surprising facts, and wacky true stories that make Arizona unforgettable.
Arizona history is now required reading in third grade (previously taught in fourth), making engaging and memorable resources more important than ever.
🏆 ONEBOOKAZ for Kids (2012, Arizona Centennial Year) • USA Best Book Award • Moonbeam Children’s Book Award — Silver • Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) Silver Medal • Benjamin Franklin Award Finalist • Eric Hoffer Award Finalist • New Mexico–Arizona Book Award Finalist
Conrad lived and worked in Arizona for more than 24 years, building a legacy of science and nature writing for young readers. Though he now resides in his home state of Ohio, his loyalty to Story Monsters — and to Arizona storytelling — has never wavered. He continues to inspire young readers nationwide through his monthly science column in Story Monsters Ink®.
Story Monsters is proudly based in Arizona — home of Story Monster & Friends — celebrating the Grand Canyon State where our stories begin.
Because Arizona history shouldn’t just be required. It should be unforgettable.
