⚡🚪 Power Out? Here’s How to Open Your Garage Door Manually
A lot of homeowners don’t realize this until they’re stuck in the garage during a power outage.
Every garage door opener has an emergency release cord—usually a red handle hanging from the opener rail. Pulling this cord disconnects the garage door from the opener, allowing you to open and close the door by hand.
Here’s what to do:
1️⃣ Make sure the garage door is fully closed if possible.
2️⃣ Pull the emergency release cord straight down.
3️⃣ Lift the garage door manually using the handle.
4️⃣ When power is restored, reconnect the opener by pulling the release cord toward the opener or simply running the opener until it re-engages (varies by model).
⚠️ Important: If your garage door has a broken spring, the door may be extremely heavy and unsafe to lift manually. A properly balanced garage door should feel relatively light. If it feels excessively heavy, stop and call a professional.
💡 Bonus Tip: Many newer garage door openers like the one in the video include a battery backup, allowing you to continue using the opener normally even when the power is out.
