Only of the original mechanical refrigeration units was built to help the sick. Dr. John Gorrie built one of these units to make ice in order to cool the air for yellow fever patients in 1841.

One of the earliest methods used to cool hot liquids - including wine- was to add sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate to the liquid. This method was known to occur as early as 1550 and was sometimes employed to rapidly cool food too.

Have you noticed frost collecting on the bottom of the freezer? This could very well be caused by a plugged drain line, which should be looked at and repaired as soon as possible.
