Due to the severe weather forecast and hazardous air quality, Gross McCleaf Gallery will be closed Friday, July 17, and tomorrow Saturday, July 18. As a result, we have rescheduled the closing weekend of our current exhibitions to next weekend, July 24 & 25.

“‘Shifting’ takes place in the grid/matrix setting (Mixed media on canvas, 14” x 11”). The eyes are indeed ascending into another reality, another version of herself. She does this by realigning herself and her energy.

There is a kind of matrix tunnel at the top right of the painting that represents the edge of the universe. Each grid window is a frame of reality to hop in or out of, presenting options based on what we do, think, how we move. It also illustrates how I think of time and space: a constantly-in-flux-everything-already-there higher dimension than what our bodies can perceive fully.

‘Shifting’ seemed the better word than ‘shadow work.’ Most of the pieces are about transition and learning. Shadow work helps me accomplish the shift. Integrating the unconscious bits of myself lets me be me.

All the paintings are self-portraits, and with some I am more successful at being myself than others. ‘Shifting’ is a continual practice, a verb, not a one-time thing. It works on the emotional level, the art practice level, the life stage level.”

There is something special about watching an artist spend time with their work after it has left the studio.

In Shifting, Mickayel Thurin approaches self-portraiture as a conversation where past selves, present selves, and imagined selves coexist. Layered with handwritten reflections, found materials, and vivid color, the exhibition traces the relationships between the many versions of ourselves that shape who we are becoming.

We’re delighted to share that the exhibition has been extended and will remain on view through July 18.

“Beep! Beep!” (2026) by Timothy Carr captures the visual language of Philadelphia through a monumental ceramic vessel. Neighborhood landmarks, hand-painted signs, and scenes from everyday city life wrap continuously around the form in a single unfolding composition.
