ABRAHAM LINCOLN went thru 7 generals before choosing Ulysses S Grant to lead the Northern States in their battle against the Southern States during the Civil war. The amazing strategically minded general chose to fight the “war” versus his predeceasing generals who courageously fought by the “battles”. Historians right that grants victory Vicksburg literally turn the tide of the presidential election, thereby helping Lincoln get reelected for his second term as President. Grant went from rags to riches not once but twice And in the end, saved his family from financial ruins,  by completing his memoir while battling throat cancer. Grant choose Walt Witman as his publisher and Whitman brilliantly sold grants memoir, door-to-door by subscription. In the end Witman ended up delivering a check for $450,000 to Grant’s widow, (back in the late 1800’s ), and once again Grant rose to beat overwhelming odds against him thru sales from his 400+ page memoir. (Thereby saving his family from financial ruin.) If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend watching the three part mini series. “GRANT” one of the most under rated leaders of our country (in my humble opinion!) based on the book by Ron Chernow.
