Abe Speller Trio feat: Steve Rice and Alex Hiele - Dec 30, 2025 - 6:30 to 9, or 10, or 11
Back Where It Began.
In the spring of 2005 I had just put together a new group, the New Earth Trio. On a tip from my wife's hairdresser that a new restaurant had opened a few months prior, I walked into what was then Cork Restaurant met the owners Kevin and Janet Meeker, we had a brief conversation, they hired me on the spot, Friday nights 7-10, that turned into 8 years. With name changes to Keg & Kitchen and Abe Speller Trio we went our separate ways always staying in touch. What I owe the Meeker's was a shot, a chance to develop a sound, an audience and a business model right there with band members at the time pianist Rocco Notte (RIP) and bassist Robert Williams. But the biggest thing of all is it has been a 20 year friendship. Kevin texted me on Friday night "can you come and play on Tuesday?" I was there on Saturday having lunch and a glass of wine with Kevin, Sylvia and Janet talking about our Grand kids. To be asked to come back and perform before the Meeker's close the doors in 2026 is special.

Isle vert 03/22/2025

Here’s a lovely new release that’s nearly in time for St. Patrick’s Day! It’s a duet with my friend and wonderful violin virtuoso Brandon Vance.

Isle Vert is inspired by the intersection of Celtic and French music in the Bretagne (Brittany) region of France. In my days playing accordion with “Rouge” I had the opportunity, through violinist Ruthie Dornfeld to perform with Patrick Desaunay, a contemporary French folk composer with beautiful compositions that often straddle those cultures. Originally I composed this as a bespoke piece for short Current/Rutledge French travel film and since then it’s been covered several times, notably by Rouge.

I just wanna say that Brandon’s fiddling on this track has made me cry more than once! My hope is that it will have an emotional resonance with you as well. Thanks for listening! Steve
