It is with great sadness that I write this post this morning while across the pond in Ireland. I was notified of the murder of AZIR HARRIS, 2020 Philadelphia Maneto Award recipient for HOPE. Azir, along with Zachary Bookbinder (fellow 2020 Award recipient), collaborated on dynamic projects to help end gun violence in Philadelphia. These two young men's "friendship story" and their dedication to a "better Philly for all" inspired Partners For Civic Pride [PFCP]to bestow this honor upon them at a young age, with bright futures ahead, working on a shared vision of peace and hope. I was told of this tragedy by a fellow 2020 Philadelphia Maneto Award recipient for PEACE, Ryshee Shaw, who lost his father to gun violence and who boldly pushed a coffin up Broad St., in his father's name, calling for an end to the madness of gun violence. He has gone on to be a strong voice in his community for an end to the senseless violence. Somehow, hearing the heartbreaking news from Ryshee, eased the pain of this tragic reality. All of the Philadelphia Maneto Award recipients in 2020 were given the award for their steadfast dedication to ending gun violence while also helping those who have experienced this utter tragedy in their lives. Their pictures are in the attached photo. Covid prevented the public awarding, scheduled for City Council. But all Awardees DID receive their award plaques, $2,700 check (for March 27th!) and their award Philly Flag via Baba Ba and his generous offer to drive PFCP members in his fancy SUV, all around Philly to deliver the awards in person, wearing our Covid masks! It was stunning . . . arriving at their homes, in their neighborhoods! It was actually a beautiful, celebratory experience, pulling up to the Awardee's home with neighbors coming out of their houses to cheer for their fellow "honored neighbor!" I'll never forget meeting Azir with his mom and dad as Azir rolled his wheelchair up to me to receive his award. Yes, this young man had been shot 5 TIMES while walking to the store which resulted in his legs being paralyzed. . . . And STILL, Azir rose above this nightmare to pursue HOPE and PEACE for others. I, and my fellow PFCP members are truly humbled and honored by this young man's brief life. His PHILADELPHIA MANETO SPIRIT will live on! In 2026, I pray we may honor Azir Harris and all the past recipients at "Philly Flag Day 2026!" ~ March 27th. On this day, our PHILADELPHIA FLAG was born and it waves the message of PEACE, HOPE, JUSTICE and PROSPERITY for ALL! We, as Philadelphians, just need to fly it and LIVE by it, as Azir Harris did . . . with the hope of making Philly the best it can be. Rest In Peace, dear Azir, and thank you for the love and hope you brought to others. ~
