Here is my one page poster on the Retention aspect of the Portal Metrics work we are doing at OU. It shows the motivating factors and has some graphs that demonstrate one of the likely approaches we will be taking to identify high risk students.

Lindsey Johnson and I put together a presentation proposal for Educause 2010 based on our work at the University of Oklahoma. If we get the presentation we will be discussing how to identify high-risk students that are likely to be susceptible to attrition based on our analysis of portal usage data. This article discusses how institutions are starting to use metrics information in Learning Management Systems to find students that are likely to drop out of online classes. At VBI we are looking at similar measures for Portal usage. VBI is also applying the usage to retention in general in an effort to find the point high-risk students have different behavior patterns than regular students. The earlier in the term we can identify the high-risk students the longer we can work on retaining them.
