I met Nikki Giovanni back in 2007 through the creator of DEF Poetry Jam on HBO. We maintained contact ever since then. Ironically, that's also how I met Mos Def's mother. Here's Nikki on the first episode of DEF Poetry Jam, being introduced by Mos Def! Just wow!

I'm deeply saddened at the passing of a dear friend today, Nikki Giovanni.
This Sistah has been so gracious to me throughout the years, appearing as a guest on my show and being a blessing to others.
Rest in Poetry, Nikki.

She continues to serve students through Medgar Evers College’s Center for Black Literature as program director of Re-envisioning Our Lives through Literature (ROLL) and as Executive Director of her non-profit, Power in the Pen Writing Workshop Inc.

Erin Joshua- Erin R. Joshua is a masters level librarian, a published author, and nationally competing poet. She writes her poetry in an effort to help others feel seen.

Moody Black- Moody Black has been a performing artist since the age of twelve, and has become a prominent force on
a multi-regional poetry scene through his enthusiastic live shows and strong work ethic.

Danne Smith Mathis- Danne Smith Mathis is a poet, writer, editor and conversation strategist. Writing is not only what she does but is also who she is!

Dr. Maxine Bryant- Dr. B - educator, innovator, thought provoker, and inspirational poet. Words are her passion - she's the master of expression.
