Seven Line Prayer

Today we honor the 39th Parinirvana anniversary of H.H. Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche: the most sublime terton, yogi, & scholar, an emanation of both Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsogyal, and the first Supreme Head of the Nyingma lineage. In his own blessed words, from a teaching in Paris in 1984: “My own root-teacher Gyurme Nyedun Wangpo, (otherwise known as, Podpong Tulku or Zapong Tulku because he was coming from Za region), would give this Seven-Line Prayer [accumulation] practice to all his students and disciples to do. He would even give it to the mothers and children. Whoever came to him to ask for teachings, he would simply say: “Just recite this and have devotion while reciting this prayer. Recite this, that is enough”. Therefore, my own root-teacher himself essentialized all practice down to this Seven-Line Prayer. So, there is no need to get bogged down in the complexities of the kyerim and things like that which we don’t really understand. On the 10th day of the 10th lunar month, Guru Padmasambhava arrived in Central Tibet and subdued all the hostile demons, negative forces, and unruly spirits of Tibet, binding them under oath as protectors of the sacred Dharma. He then established the glorious monastery of Samye, lighting the lamp of the sublime Dharma of the Sutra and Mantra vehicles. Guiding his twenty-five disciples to liberation, he became known as Guru Padmasambhava: the Lotus-Born Guru. The special benefits of observing this tenth day festival with the customary puja offerings are, according to Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche: “wrongs and downfalls of the three vows such as disrespecting sacred objects, and breakages and impairments of samaya will all be mended, and your mind stream will be totally purified.”

“At the end, we say Guru Pema Siddhi Hung. This is the mantra, and it gives a particular validation of what has been described. If we do it in a dualistic way we are saying, “Please give me this now.” If we do it in a non-dual way then this Guru Pema Siddhi Hung is...here it is! We just enter....it’s there.
It’s very helpful to have a lot of faith. You can pray in the manner of a desperate child that’s lost its parent. You can be lonely. You can cry. You can bring a lot of passion into it, but that is only the first half. You are using this intensification to bring about the merging, and the merging, at the point of merging, requires you to be calm and deep and clear, otherwise the emotion will drive you straight past the opening.
Generally speaking, nyingmapas believe that this prayer has a lot of blessing power in it, that it is a true expression of the energy of Padmasamb- hava, and that by saying this prayer the resonance, which is inherent in it, helps to bring us into alignment with the nature of the three kayas. As you know, C R Lama [Chimé Rigdzin Rinpoche]

On this tenth day of the seventh lunar month, when the tīrthikas of Zangling threw Padmasambhava into the Ganges river, he displayed the miracle of completely reversing its flow of water. He then ascended into the sky where he performed a vajra dance, inspiring great devotion and securing the kingdom as a haven for Buddhist practice. Here he became renowned as Guru Khading Tsal: The Guru Soaring in the Sky Like a Garuda. According to Kyabje Dudjom Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche: when one properly performs the customary Ganapuja offerings on this day, chronic ailments, weaknesses of the immune system and the like are purified, the body regains health, the mind settles in happiness, one’s entourage and wealth increase, and aspirations are fulfilled.

This 10th day of the 6th lunar month marks the miracle birth of Guru Padmasambhava according to Sangye Lingpa’s terma. H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche states: “On this day Guru Rinpoche was born within a lotus blossom on Lake Dhanakośa and, turning the wheel of Dharma for the ḍākinīs of the island, he became known as Guru Tsokyé Dorje. The benefits of performing the ta***ic feast on this occasion are that all kinds of illness, döns and obstructors will be pacified, and lifespan, merit and prosperity will be greatly increased.” And Kyabje Bhakha Tulku Rinpoche shares: “This is the most supreme of Guru Rinpoche’s supplications. Before Guru Rinpoche’s emanation manifested, the wisdom dakinis invoked the wisdom-realization of Buddha Amitabha and Avalokiteshvara through the Seven Line Prayer; his emanation then was miraculously born. The teachings of secret ta**ra are proclaimed to beings possessing devotion and pure perception. Therefore, receiving its blessings is solely dependent upon one having faith or not. Reciting this prayer with the altruistic motivation to benefit others will pacify plagues and diseases. Chanting and accumulating this prayer will certainly be a cause for peace in this world. Guru Rinpoche promised that chanting it one hundred thousand times with intense yearning desire, faith, and devotion, one will take rebirth in the Zangdokpalri pure realm”
