Monday History: Hurricane Hugo

In September 1989, Hurricane Hugo slammed into the South Carolina coast near Charleston as a Category 4 hurricane.

It wasn’t a “normal storm” for the state — it was a turning point.

Wind speeds exceeded 135 mph. Entire communities were cut off overnight. Power was out for weeks in some areas. Roads were blocked by fallen trees so massive that crews couldn’t clear them fast enough to get through.

Coastal towns were hit hardest, but the damage stretched far inland. Homes were torn apart, boats were thrown into neighborhoods, and forestry losses alone were in the billions.
