The house that started it all…

This success story starts with an over 130 year old structure (built 1885-1895) that you can find on our survey site (link in bio). Restoration was finished in 2024, winning a Carolopolis award in 2026. The transformation is nothing short of heroic. Without straying too far from the original design, and their team restored this building to its former glory. They say pictures are truly are a thousand words and all we can really say is… wow!

TODAY, the city council will vote on the demolition of this neglected structure - 148 SMITH ST -
For at least 30 years, this historic property has been owned by the same corporate entity, but has yet to be touched in any significant way for those 30 long years. This is not owned by an uninformed family or left to be forgotten. This is one of the many examples of purposeful neglect. Records show a number attempts to appeal for demolition as of late (all of which have been denied). These attempts have reached a head today. Today, our community has one last chance to reach out to the city council and testify. Let’s SAVE THIS STRUCTURE together.
As of 8 years ago, our survey has recognized over 70 structures from endangered to saved due to the work of owners, architects, builders, sub-contractors and more who were willing to take on the difficult but necessary task to preserve the historic integrity of our architecture here in Charleston. This shows us that it is possible for a “lost cause” to be preserved and that there are tons of people who believe in this mission that are willing to do something about it.
See for more info and history on this structure.
Come to CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.
