Message me the acronym "APUSH" for more details. I have 40+ years of experience teaching and tutoring social studies, including AP US History (APUSH). Furthermore, I served as a reader for the College Board's national APUSH exam.
Do you believe in yourself?
This is a basic question that may be easy to answer, AND can prescribe the direction of your life.
Perception is reality. It self-defines (often erroneously) how we see ourselves playing out our lives.
Are you and/or your kids a glass-is-half-empty or half-full individual?
Are you positive and optimistic, or negative and fatalistic?
The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves drive our realities.
Whether teaching or tutoring kids in social studies courses or coaching student-athletes, I see negative belief paradigms dictate results...
"There's no way I can get an A-grade in this course!"
"I'm not smart enough in history to do well on my next test!"
"I cannot hit this pitcher!"
These are self-defeating mindsets, and I deal with them every day as I help kids overcome their challenges.
What's the message here?
To be successful in social studies or on the ball field, a positive mindset is critical. Students and athletes must believe they can achieve the goals they are hoping to "hit" (pun intended).
I am always thrilled when a student accomplishes an academic or athletic goal...and then surpasses it! This results in setting higher goals...and reaching them!
Last year, one of my AP US History students could not fathom getting the top score (5) on the national APUSH exam.
After working with her, she excitedly relayed to me that she indeed overcame her fears and got that 5!
Another student was struggling in AP US History and felt he was destined for a lousy grade. Working together, we improved his outlook AND performance. He ended the semester with an A grade.
For these and countless other students of mine, school was impossible...until it no longer was.
With the right guidance, what seems impossible to students can be made feasible. It may take a bit of time, and that's just fine.
