He was drafted in the first round of the 1973 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks but chose to start his professional career in the ABA with the Virginia Squires. Throughout his career, Nater played for several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, New York Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Buffalo Braves/San Diego Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers1. He is the only player to have led both the ABA and NBA in rebounding, showcasing his dominance on the boards1. Nater was a two-time ABA All-Star and was named the ABA Rookie of the Year in 1974.
