DPW Winter Weather Operations

Weather Update: Current snow measurements across this City vary from 3-6” with heavier snow amounts on the north side; an additional 2-3” of snow is possible today. Snow started with a high moisture content, making it heavier, but has transitioned to a lighter snow; with significant blowing and drifting on streets. Cold temperatures are expected Tuesday, with temperatures warming as the week progresses.

DPW Snow and Ice Control Response: Salt trucks began addressing the streets when the rain transitioned to sleet and mounted front blades in preparation for the snow. Equipment was able to address some residential streets, but had to shift to main streets when the snow started picking up and we saw blowing and drifting. Garbage and recycling trucks are assisting with today’s plowing effort.

Due to the long duration of the storm, residents should expect travel impacts throughout the duration of the storm and 24-48 hours after the snow has stopped as equipment efficiently works to address every street. DPW remains fully staffed and dedicated to making all roadways safe and passable at speeds appropriate for winter conditions.

As residents completed a special leaf rake out, DPW will make every effort to not plow leaves onto the tree lawn. As temperatures are expected to be in the upper 40’s by Thursday, snow should be expected in parking lanes to limit leaf impacts for residents.

Snow and ice control service requests will be available after the snow event as plows work their way through every street as efficiently as possible.

DPW Leaf Collection Update: DPW’s special spring leaf collection was scheduled to start today (March 16th); unfortunately this storm means leaf collection will be delayed until snowmelt allows operations to proceed. DPW appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation as we manage multiple operations. The fall leaf collection was impacted by an early heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and frequent snow and ice control response events. A full leaf collection cycle of the city will be completed. Garbage & Recycling Collection – Monday’s garbage and recycling collection have been suspended. Residents should set out their cart on the regularly scheduled collection day and leave at the collection point until serviced. Snow and ice on top of and around the cart must be cleared with a clear path for the cart to be rolled to the truck for collection. You can confirm your regular collection day or look for updates at: milwaukee.gov/collectionday

Parking – No impacts at this time. As winter parking regulations ended March 1st, parking lanes will be snow impacted on main and residential streets through cleanup operations and until temperatures rise. Should a Snow Emergency be necessary; updates would be shared through the media, aldermanic/elected emails, text alerts (sign-up at milwaukeeparkingalerts.com), on social media accounts and posted on DPWs website.

DPW Winter Weather Operations

Weather Update: The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the City of Milwaukee starting Saturday evening (March 14) through most of the day Monday (March 16). Today’s forecasts for the storm have improved to 5-8” of snow expected; starting Saturday evening through most of the day on Monday. With warmer March temperatures, the snow is expected to be heavy due to the moisture content.

NWS has also issued a high wind warning for Milwaukee, with wind gusts of up to 60 mph expected through this afternoon.

DPW Forestry Response: Forestry emergency response crews are responding to emergency requests involving trees or branches blocking the public right-of-way. Please be patient as crews work to safely and efficiently open the public right-of-way. This work is highly technical and presents significant safety risks to the public and City workers.

The priority is trees that are completely blocking streets and those on homes or vehicles. Once those are addressed we would shift to tree/branches partially blocking streets/sidewalks. Sunday may bring additional tree damage due to high winds, heavy snow, and/or freezing rain.

Service Requests: The best way to submit a request for emergency Forestry response is at milwaukee.gov/clickforaction or the Milwaukee Mobile Action App. This ensures the request is routed directly to the correct Forestry area. Pictures are also helpful to help crews prioritize effectively.

How long is the tree or branch?

Broken Branch Down – Not Blocking (non-Emergency) – To be used for pickup of branches from a City tree that does not require emergency response.

Brush Pickup Request - For collection of branches from private trees by Sanitation Services. Branches should be less than 6” in diameter and no longer than 4’. Larger items can be taken to the Drop Off Center at no charge.
