Mettle Health
Something new is beginning.
We’ve been accompanying people through serious illness, dying, and grief for a while now, and we’ve always believed that stories are part of how we do that well. So we’re starting a book club. And we couldn’t have asked for a better place to begin.
On August 14, join us for the inaugural Mettle Book Club with Darnell Lamont Walker Emmy-nominated children’s television writer, death doula, and author of Never Can Say Goodbye: The Life of a Death Doula and the Art of a Peaceful End.
Darnell bridges worlds most of us keep separate; through stories told with warmth, humor, and honesty. He reminds us that the simplest expressions of love and care are often the most radical.
Read the book. Come with your questions. Bring a friend.
We’ll see you there.

David Hockney, who died today, once said he could find excitement watching rain fall on a puddle.
We believe this capacity for wonder is accessible is all of us. It is part of what keeps us alive to our lives, and it is something that might not come naturally.
We encourage you to follow Hockney’s lead and take a moment to find beauty in the everyday. Today, tomorrow, and/or the rest of the days that follow. (And then tell us what you found.)

Letting go of the idea of independence.
Letting go of expectations.
Letting go of the idea of who you have to be.
There are many moments in aging, illness and grief where letting go is a powerful act.
Have you experienced this moment? What did you let go of and what did that let in?

Guilt is one of caregiving’s constant companions; and a feeling that doesn’t get a lot of airtime.
We’re excited to welcome Jeanette Yates, author of From Guilt to Good Enough, who spent four decades caring for her mother.
Jeanette invites caregivers to get curious about guilt: where it lives, how it’s experienced, and whether the role of caregiver feels chosen or simply absorbed from what was expected.

I got out of bed
on two strong legs.
It might have been
otherwise. I ate
cereal, sweet
milk, ripe, flawless
peach. It might
have been otherwise.
I took the dog uphill
to the birch wood.
All morning I did
the work I love.
At noon I lay down
with my mate. It might
have been otherwise.
We ate dinner together
at a table with silver
candlesticks. It might
have been otherwise.
I slept in a bed
in a room with paintings
on the walls, and
planned another day
just like this day.
But one day, I know,
it will be otherwise.
