Wren Heltzel, a Midland, TX native, graduated from Greenwood High School and is pursuing a Music Education degree. Her favorite instruments to play are the marimba and marching cymbals. While her focus is percussion, Wren also plays piano and saxophone, the latter of which she pursued as her music minor. In her free time, she enjoys knitting, cosplay, and reading.

Wren appreciates the respectful communication and the balance of fun and professionalism within the UTPB Percussion Studio. She values the collaborative environment and the ability to connect with her peers.

When asked about her favorite piece performed with the studio, Wren couldn’t choose between “embedded siGnals” and “Gravity.” Both pieces hold a special significance for her.

Here’s our Director of Percussion Studies!!

Dr. Andrew Veit, a distinguished percussionist and educator hailing from Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, embarked on his musical journey at the University of Iowa, where he honed his skills in Percussion Pedagogy and Performance. His passion for rhythm and melody led him to master a diverse range of percussion instruments, with a particular fondness for the enchanting kalimba. He also shows skills on bass guitar when he gets the chance.

Beyond his musical pursuits, Dr. Veit finds joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoys spending time outdoors, indulging in a round of golf or maintaining his physical fitness through regular workouts. His dedication to his craft and his students is evident in his role as an esteemed faculty member at the University of Texas Permian Basin. He thrives on the energy and enthusiasm of his students, and finds great satisfaction in sharing his knowledge and passion with them.

One of his most memorable experiences with the UTPB Percussion Studio was performing the dynamic and exhilarating piece “Beserker,” composed by Dr. Caleb Pickering. The intricate rhythms and powerful melodies of the piece resonated with both Dr. Veit and his students, creating a shared musical experience that they will never forget.

Dr. Veit’s love for music extends beyond the classroom and the stage. In his personal life, he shares his home with a beloved cat named Remo, named after the musical instrument manufacturing company.
