Many baby animals — including elephant and hippo calves feed on dung from their mothers or fellow herd members when they're transitioning from drinking their mother's milk to eating solid foods.
Devouring this f***l matter helps babies establish healthy bacterial communities in their guts, which, in turn, aids normal digestion.
Such babies do not have the necessary microorganisms in their guts to digest plant materials when they are born. The only way for them to get the required digestive bacteria is to eat their mother’s or other herd members’ faeces. This is something we see them do when they are shifting from milk to plant materials.
