It's both heart-warming and fascinating that many friends have taken the time for a line wishing me a "Happy Birthday." It's just...nice. Truth be told, once I turned 21 birthdays didn't much exist or matter, and I suspect that's true for all of us. Nonetheless, a moment's recognition of "Birthday," in the abstract, might usefully lead to some self-evaluation.

What have I done in the last year that merit's my taking up space and breathing air on earth? Have I been a good citizen (think "Pledge of Allegiance"), a good parent (think "The Road Less Traveled"), a caring neighbor (think Matthew 22:40 - You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” a sharing human with no boundaries of race, religion, or social status when it comes to showing mercy.

And I suppose it'd be logical to ask if our nation has shown mercy around the world.

Thank you for helping me to remember these things. You are true good neighbors. As we travel along the path, I want to always remember to be a Good Samaritan. The highest calling.
