Fossil Opera by Théo Mercier
Place Graslin, Nantes. On view through September 6, 2026.

For this large-scale installation, Mercier sculpted 600 tonnes of sand into giant ammonite forms rising 4.5 metres across Place Graslin, splitting the square with rubble pulled from construction sites around Nantes and half buried cars left over from before the space went pedestrian.

Created for Le Voyage à Nantes 2026 under the theme of Earth, the work turns the city’s neoclassical square into a kind of open excavation, staged directly in front of the opera house it faces. The cars run their headlights and play opera excerpts, answering the singers performing across the square, while the rubble stands in for the city’s constant construction and renovation. Every material is on loan: once the installation closes, the sand, rubble, and cars return to where they came from, leaving the square as it was.
