For generations, Hyde Park School served children in the Chelsea neighborhood, becoming an important part of everyday life for local families. The school remained open until the early 1970s, when Memphis City Schools closed many smaller neighborhood schools during district consolidation and expanded busing.
Afterward, the building found new life as the Four Chelsea C’s Neighborhood Service Center before eventually being demolished sometime during the 1980s.
Though the building is gone, Hyde Park School remains a cherished memory for many who grew up in the neighborhood.
💬 Did you attend Hyde Park School, or do you remember what stood there after it closed?

Before Memphis rap reached the national stage, Reginald Boyland and OTS (On The Strength) Records were helping build the city’s independent hip hop movement. OTS gave local artists a place to record, develop their sound, and release music during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The label played an early role in the careers of artists like 8Ball & MJG, Gangsta Pat, Al Kapone, Three 6 Mafia and others, helping lay the foundation for the Memphis rap scene that would later influence hip hop around the world.
💬 Do you remember OTS Records or have any memories of the artists who recorded there?
