A dream of mine that began as a 14-year-old, closeted, curious, sensitive boy in small-town Mississippi has become a reality: living and experiencing an art scene that combines experimental projection art with music, poetry, and performance.

The fantasy started in a Books-A-Million in Tupelo. I strayed from the young adult fiction shelves and entered the one measly art aisle, where I saw a baby-blue book cover with the title POPISM in a bold, white font. Behind, a limp-wristed Andy Warhol and his main muse, Edie Sedgwick.

I remember my heart racing as I reached for the book (a memoir by Andy Warhol and Pat Hackett), looking over my shoulder, making sure nobody realized the stomach-plummeting insight I had: there’s something weird about this man. He looks…gay. And I’m reaching for this gay book. I’m definitely going to Hell.

But the severe promise of burning for eternity did not stop me from opening the gay pages of this gay book and discovering my North Star for years to come. The life of Andy Warhol, the surrounding underground scene, the drugged-up drag queens, the unbridled q***r desire transformed into experimental art, a self-made Momma’s boy artist pining to be accepted by the mainstream. Colors, colors, so many colors. I escaped into them.

I latched onto this stream of gritty glamour images as I learned about Pop Art, the beatniks, and the starving artists of the 1950s and 1960s in poor neighborhoods in New York. I made it my entire personality, as one does when they feel misunderstood in a place intent on misunderstanding you. It was a subconscious rebellion that said, “I know about this special place in history that you can’t possibly know about. I’m going to show you just how different I am,” while screaming that I was gay without actually saying it.
