Just in time for the .coil 2026 design challenge! 🌿 

This design is inspired by the flowers in my small garden and the quiet, cozy moments they bring. I leaned into a warm, cheerful palette with a soft, peaceful feel, something that makes me smile no matter the season ☺️

One of my favorite recent designs is this misty tree line inspired by a trip to Colorado: more layered, more intentional, and far more refined than where I began. 🌲

My very first pattern was created in Procreate! 😺 I was proud of it, but I didn’t fully understand how repeats worked or how to build something beyond the basics. I also struggled to recolor it; changing the background was basically my only option.

Now I design primarily in Adobe Illustrator, which has completely changed my workflow! I can clean up lines with ease, scale artwork without losing quality, recolor entire repeats in seconds, and build collections that feel cohesive instead of accidental. Can you guess that my favorite tool is the Recolor Artwork tool?! 🤩

This is the current chapter of my calligraphy journey, Chapter 4: Growth and Beyond 🚀

Around late 2022, I realized I wanted to invest more seriously in my creative path to see where calligraphy could take me: for fun, growth, and for myself. That curiosity led me to attending my first ever IAMPETH conference in 2023. Watching the masters at work, exploring the Artist showcase, and seeing all the incredible pieces donated for the silent auction was humbling and exhilarating! 🤩 It reminded me that growth is ongoing, and the joy comes from discovering, creating, and being inspired by creativity all around me. 🌟

Since then, I’ve been learning Spencerian, diving into surface pattern design, learning Adobe Illustrator and vectorizing calligraphy, while also studying for the Ornamental Penmanship Proficiency certificate.✒️ Growth comes from gently pushing past what feels comfortable, whether it’s trying a new nib, adjusting my grip, or experimenting with a new medium 🎨 Sometimes loops tiny, ovals aren’t quite ovals, lines shake, and slants go every which way! But instead of stressing, I just laugh 😂 Critique helps me improve, and joy keeps me going. Laugh it off, keep showing up, and enjoy the process! 🥰

The best part? Seeing the progress made, knowing there’s still so much to explore, and realizing that growth happens one small step at a time. Every practice page, experiment, and lesson add up. 📖Each “oops” moment is part of the journey.⛰️ Embracing both mistakes and successes helps us grow as artists and as people. 🌱 Celebrate your oops moments as a sign of growth, recognizing them and making the change, and using them to grow.

Hi friends! It’s day 3 and that means Chapter 3: Learning Curves 🎀

It's 2020 and my daily routine suddenly shifted. Being isolated working from home, I felt like I was falling apart. I realized I needed a change in my daily routine and wanted to reignite my creativity. For my birthday, I gifted myself an 8-week modern calligraphy bootcamp course! Modern felt more approachable and an easier point of entry for me to enjoy, and it gave me the spark I needed to dive in ✒️✨

I practiced daily, sometimes for two or three hours in the evenings. It wasn't just to see growth and improvement, though I was overjoyed when something clicked! 💡But it also brought a great meditative practice and was such a welcoming balance against a fast-paced day job 👩🏻‍💻

Daily practice, homework, self-critiques, and formal feedback gave me everything my DIY experiments hadn’t: the right tools like a pointed nib 🤭, pressure control, guidelines 🤩, and the value of consistent practice.

That bootcamp was the turning point where calligraphy shifted from "something fun to try" into a relaxing and joyful practice. It showed me that every learning curve, awkward strokes, wobbly lines, and all are part of the enjoyment!
