Yeah, I know… when you think about Zinfandel, you automatically think about gigantic jugs of Gallo and cheap boxes of Franzia – the white and pink zinfandel. It’s gained notoriety as the pinnacle of cheap wine – but you may want to give it another try. Look past the white Zinfandel and go for a red.
A good red California Zinfandel can be either light, medium or full bodied and is usually bursting with fruit aroma, ranging from blackberry and cherry to raspberry. You may even notice hints of spice or pepper. Red Zinfandel can be very good and is versatile enough to pair with many foods. The other notable thing about most Zinfandel is that it’ll get you feeling the way you want to feel as they are typically 13.5% abv and above. If you get caught slipping, it can sneak up on you!
The brand you see here – Scarlet Path – piqued my curiosity mainly because of the velvety label, lol, so I grabbed it. It’s medium bodied with a deep ruby hue. From the first sniff I was bombarded with cherry aroma. Despite it smelling fruity, it’s not sweet, but more of an off dry and is quite smooth considering it’s 13.5% abv. Not a lot of tannin, not a lot of acidity. The taste lingers in your mouth for quite a while after you swallow it, which is a good thing. This would pair well with steak but would go equally as well with something like fried chicken.
This is not one of the wines that I sell – you can pick this up at Aldi. If you see it on the shelf, give it a shot and let me know what you think.
