In ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi the Native Hawaiian language “Kahu” is translated into english as: “Honored attendant, guardian, nurse, keeper of ʻunihipili bones, regent, keeper, administrator, warden, caretaker, master, mistress; pastor, minister, reverend, or preacher of a church; one who has a dog, cat, pig, or other pet. According to J. S. Emerson; 92:2, kahu “implies the most intimate and confidential relations between the god and its guardian or keeper, while the word kahuna suggests more of the professional relation of the priest to the community.” In te reo Māori (the Māori language of Aotearoa/New Zealand), kahu has several meanings depending on the context: “1. Cloak or garment – A kahu is a covering, cloak, robe, or garment. Traditional ceremonial cloaks such as a korowai are sometimes referred to as a type of kahu. 2. To clothe, cover, or wrap – As a verb, kahu can mean to dress, cloak, cover, or envelop something. 3. Hawk – In some contexts, kahu refers to the New Zealand swamp harrier, also known as the Kāhu, a bird of prey respected for its keen sight and ability to soar high.” In a spiritual or symbolic sense, many Māori view the kāhu as representing: * Vision and perspective * Guardianship and protection * Awareness and observation * Connection between earth and sky
