We played our first official show 36 years ago yesterday, at a Teriyaki House in Fontana. Our drummer did the flyer art—the original art shown here, which served as a “master” from which we made copies at Kinko’s. If you look closely, you can see the paste up and the pencil sketches used to make the hand-drawn art. Note also the $1 off coupon and the map… no internet back then, kiddos!

This was also the first appearance of our Hepcat mascot. initially had the idea of a gritty alley cat, but Greg Lee commented on its legs, wondering why they were so “scruffy” and unkempt, when they should be slick. Narvas made the change, but it’s uncertain whether or not that version was reproduced for this show. If anyone has this flyer, that’s the only way we’ll know!

As Narvas recalls, “There were probably about 2-3 people there. Such a random venue—a Teriyaki House?? It was in the middle of nowhere. We’d all packed into a utility van with our gear to make it out to Fontana. No seats, nothing. We were all sitting on bare metal in the back, with everything sliding around while we flew down the freeway.” Good times! 😸
