Approximately 95% of queries are rejected within that year, resulting in only three to five authors being selected from the remaining 5%. Having been involved in the publishing industry for over ten years, I've noticed the frustrations on both sides.

From authors: There is too much unconscious bias among literary agents. More than 80% of literary agents come from the same demographic. They're not connecting with stories from other demographics or not accepting outside demographics that do not fit a narrow stereotype.

From agents: An agent's clear and direct instructions for sending submissions will generate thousands of queries from authors who completely disregarded them.
