On Wednesday night, I said goodbye to my best friend of 15 years. As she crossed over the rainbow bridge, all I could say was “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.” So, Dixie, thank you for everything you taught me and will still continue to teach me. You are the reason I am in rescue, you are the reason I will continue to advocate rescuing senior dogs, and you are the reason I am the person that I am today. I don’t know if I would be where I am, where I know I am supposed to be, without you. If you knew Dixie, you knew she was incredibly resilient and inspiring. My mom caught someone dumping her in the bushes when I was 12. I’ll never forget my mom shaking her finger at the dudes who threw her in the bushes and giving them the damn business. Right then was when it clicked for me that rescuing dogs was something I knew I was meant to do. If you knew Dixie, you knew she was blind. She went blind when she was 8, and never let it get in her way. She accepted every challenge life gave her wholeheartedly and never backed down. She was a tiny super hero. I will never forget how incredibly happy she made me, everyday, for over fifteen years. So, Dixie, thank you. Thank you for being there always. Thank you for everything. I am so grateful to have got to spend so much time with you. You tiny, 8lb ball of wired hair, you will forever hold a ginormous place in my heart.
