Art Laboe didn’t just coin the famous phrase “Oldies But Goodies”—he literally connected the streets. Before cell phones and social media, the only way to send a message across the divided neighborhoods of Los Angeles was through Laboe’s radio show. He would read live dedications from guys locked up in prison to their families, and from local street cruisers to their loved ones. On a Sunday night, hundreds of lowriders from completely different, often rival, neighborhoods would be gliding down the boulevard, all tuned to the exact same radio station, listening to the exact same sweet soul songs.

Art Laboe proved that the right music could bring total peace to the streets.
