Listen to any of the 114 songs about making or receiving a phone call, your horoscope, stories about the old phone system, and historic speeches on old analog phones from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Voices on the Line by N.Sputnik will be an Angels Gate Cultural Center on April 26 as part of Open Studios Day Spring 2026.
Voices on the Line is a collection of vintage analog telephones sit together, on a table in a room, or on a blanket in a park. Wires connect them to each other, but there’s no phone company, no line running to the wall. Pick up a receiver and there’s a dial tone anyway. A little black book sits beside each phone with numbers listed. Extensions leading to recorded speeches, songs about phone calls, stories about the way phone systems used to work, voices from decades past. Some extensions are unlisted. Some you find by accident. Dial 411 and see where it takes you. Or figure out how to call the other phones (there’s a clue in the little black book) and find yourself connected to a stranger who is also interacting with the piece.
