Language matters. This Autism Month, we’re sharing simple language shifts that can help you become a more considerate, kind, and neurodiversity-affirming BCBA.

In our field, things can change quickly. Cultural perspectives evolve, and individual preferences vary. However, it’s important to put your best foot forward by choosing neurodiversity-affirming language. As clinicians, we are on the front lines of helping individuals live dignified, independent lives—and that begins with speaking about each person with respect.

👆Today’s BCBA Pro Tip...

f you can’t be anything else, always be AVAILABLE!

You can be the BCBA everyone wants to work with by responding promptly and being available to help when needed. Of course, it’s important to set clear boundaries around when you can be reached. Still, you might be surprised at how successful you can be when you consistently show up and get back to people in a timely manner.

Let’s talk Conditioned Motivating Operations! Many BCBAs refer to CMOs as one of the more challenging ABA concepts...let’s see if we can use a little CoachABA magic to make it easier. 😉✨

To start, let’s review the definition of Motivating Operation. Motivating operation refers to the environment, emotion, or conditions which can temporarily alter the value of specific stimuli. Motivating Operations can be conditioned OR unconditioned. Today’s post focuses on conditioned operations.

Studying for the BCBA Exam? We got you!

Here's a tip from Sarah, one of our CoachABA co-director:

Albert Einstein famously said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” One of the best ways to build fluency with ABA concepts is to teach them. Try recording a short video, writing a brief post, or creating a study page explaining a concept in your own words. If you can accurately teach the concept to someone else, it’s a good indicator that your understanding is strong.

Keep going! You got this. 🦾

April is Autism Acceptance & Awareness Month.

As BCBAs, many of us make our career working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We have an ethical responsibility to stand up for those that we serve not only as clinicians, but as advocates for their rights. Throughout the month of April, we’ll be sharing perspectives from ABA professionals about how we can promote Autism Acceptance and Awareness in everything we do.

From Holly and Sarah:

"Promoting autism acceptance and awareness requires us, as BCBAs, to intentionally align our everyday practice with values of dignity, respect, and person-centered care. This means prioritizing the individual’s preferences, strengths, and autonomy when designing and implementing interventions, rather than focusing solely on reducing behaviors. We can model acceptance by advocating for inclusive environments and ensuring that the goals we target are socially meaningful and enhance quality of life.

Beyond direct services, we promote awareness through ongoing education of caregivers, staff, and community members—helping others understand autism in a way that fosters empathy and inclusion rather than stigma. In everything we do, from data collection to collaboration, we have the opportunity and responsibility to elevate the voices of those we serve and ensure our practices reflect both ethical standards and genuine respect for neurodiversity."

What is an Operational Definition in ABA?
The idea behind an Operational Definition is that it should be specific, observable, and measurable so that anyone could see it and record it. The definition should combat any uncertainty or lack of clarity.

“You’re just a complicated houseplant” is actually pretty good self care advice.
Both in the sense that you literally need water and sunlight to thrive...and also in the sense that like a plant, it takes patience and moderation to bring our goals to fruition.

Like a plant, you learn and grow little by little. Every day you give yourself a little bit of water, and every day your roots grow a little deeper. Be careful, if you overwater, or try to do too much at once, you can hurt yourself. Consistency is key.

Build a study schedule. Do a little bit everyday. Reap the results as you transform.

You are in bloom.
