𧬠Genetics is cool.
Before her DNA test, the breed guesses for Penny were all over the place:
πΆ Carolina Dog? Jack Russell? Feist? Terrier? Honestly... no two vets agreed.
Then her DNA results came back, and they surprised just about everyone.
That's one of my favorite things about genetics; it reminds us that our eyes can be fooled. Dogs don't inherit breeds like following a recipe. They inherit thousands of individual genes that influence everything from ear shape and body size to coat color and markings.
Speaking of coat color...
You know the classic question: Are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes?
The answer is "black with white stripes". Their skin is black, and the white stripes occur where pigment doesn't develop.
Penny is the same way! She isn't technically a "white dog with brown spots." Genetically, she's actually a brown (tan) dog with white spotting. The white isn't her base color; it's the absence of pigment in those areas. If she didn't inherit the white spotting genes, she'd likely be almost entirely tan/brown!
Even her size shows how fascinating genetics are. Her DNA predicted an adult weight of around **61 lbs**, yet she's a healthy, full-grown **45 lbs**. Genetics provides probabilities, not guarantees. Every dog inherits a unique combination of genes, and those genes interact in incredibly complex ways.
It's a great reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and that DNA often tells a very different story than our eyes.

ADOPTED
π ADOPTABLE: Crash the Console King - Professional Cuddler, Part-Time Dictatorπ
π Lexington, SC
Crash is a ~3-year-old 10 lb Pekingese mix looking for a home that appreciates a dog with a big personality and absolutely no filter.
Found as a stray and pulled from animal control after no owner came forward, Crash is now ready to find a family of his own.
β Neutered & Microchipped
β Up to date on Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella
β Heartworm negative & Dewormed
β Current on flea & heartworm prevention
Crash is good with dogs, cats, and kids, but he's also convinced he should be the center of everyone's universe. He loves attention, cuddles, blankets, comfy beds, and being involved in whatever you're doing.
He's also very vocal about his opinions.
If you've owned a Pekingese before, you'll recognize the personality immediately:
π Bossy
π€ Opinionated
π Sassy
π§ Smart
π Extremely affectionate
π Highly food motivated
Food is serious business in Crash's world. While he has no formal aggression concerns, we do recommend feeding him separately from other pets. If anything were going to start an argument, it would be food.
π‘ House trained?
Yes, with one small catch...
Crash prefers emotional support while pottying.
If you simply put him outside and immediately let him back in, he may decide he'd rather hold it. If someone goes outside with him and gives him time to potty, he does great.
π©Ί Medical Notes:
Crash has a flea allergy that has caused some thinning fur on his underside. He will need to remain on monthly flea prevention to prevent future flare-ups.
β Grooming Needs:
His grooming requirements are fairly minimal and include regular brushing, nail trims, and occasional trimming of a few areas. Nail trims aren't exactly his favorite activity, but a grooming hammock makes the process much easier.
πΆ On walks, Crash stays glued to your side. In a fenced yard, he'll happily hang out nearby. Off leash with no boundaries? That's a different story. He may suddenly decide he has important business elsewhere, so secure containment is important.
Crash is looking for someone who understands that small dogs can come with very large personalities. If you're looking for a quiet dog that blends into the background, he probably isn't your guy. If you're looking for a hilarious little companion with endless commentary and plenty of love to give, Crash may be exactly what you're looking for.
π© Message or comment if interested. Please include Crash's name when messaging, as we assist with multiple animals.
π Adoption application and contract required.
