Work to complete the Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association's historic Engine 60 is chugging along. A new cab was installed on the 1913 vintage locomotive June 11. The replica cab was built from scratch in Tennessee. A crew from FMW Solutions used a crane to lift the cab onto the back of the locomotive.

The threshold for success is low for a recently installed fence enclosure designed to protect nesting least turns on The Point in Cape Henlopen State Park. If one least tern fledges, it will be considered successful, said Shawn Sullivan, a beach-nesting bird biologist for the state, during a recent trip out to the site.
Last month, the state announced it had implemented a new approach to protecting least terns that are trying to nest at The Point. The small migratory seabirds have a gray back and wings, a yellow bill and a black cap with a white triangle on the forehead. They are currently listed as a state endangered species.

About a month after getting the go-ahead from city commissioners, Rehoboth Beach staff have finished painting lines and installing stop signs on Henlopen Avenue. City Manager Taylour Tedder announced the work was complete during a commissioner meeting June 8. “Stop signs, yellow striping and painting the white stop bars have all been added and completed,” said Tedder, as part of his city manager’s report at the beginning of the meeting.

The state is seeking comment on a project in Oak Orchard that, if approved, includes the construction of a boardwalk the length of a football field and an observation dock into Emily Gut.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy issued a public notice May 22 about the project at the northern end of Basin Road in the Indian River community. The project is located immediately south of Emily Gut. Immediately to the north of the gut is a conservation area, about 240 acres in size, associated with the Peninsula Golf and Country Club.

The fifth annual University of Delaware Chicken Chase 5K attracted 259 runners June 13. The free-roaming race roared north from Dewey across the Silver Lake bridge before turning right up to the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and back. Oddly enough, half the runners are two miles behind before hitting the one-mile mark. Josh Hayman, 33, of Newark was the overall winner in 16:01. Alex Longeway of Elkton, Md., was second in 16:47. Kara Phelps, 35, of Lewisburg, Pa., was first female and third overall in 17:53.
