I chose to go ahead and cut the inside of the reinforcement ring and I'm glad I did. Now I have to level the edge of the shell and do the classic round over external edge. Then I can go back and look for imperfections fill them hand sand them and then I typically put on three coats of polyurethane to protect them. Then after that cures I coat the edges with paraffin wax to give Extra Protection as well as lubricate and seal where the drum head goes. This job was a little tougher than I thought because those rings we're extra thick, uneven, and very very hard wood!
