Happy Sunday!
Origin Story
Jack Kirby (originally Jacob Kurtzberg) son of Austrian Jewish immigrants, used the pseudonym ‘Curt Davis’ for The Diary of Dr Hayward, for Eisner & Iger studios, before switching to Jack Kirby, because it reminded him of actor Cary Grant James Cagney. “James Cagney” scans better. Sorry, I’m somewhat dyslexic.
Here is a panel from that.
Dock Hayward, on the other hand, born in 1875 in a little London ‘burb named Bedlam, accidentally killed his parents while experimenting with 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, the interesting properties of which were being simultaneously discovered by Carl Häussermann, in 1891.
This kind of behavior tends to attract the attention of the authorities, and so Dock Hayward came to be bequeathed a position on the HRM Victoria, the first of Her Majesty’s Royal Time Force fleet of time traveling dirigibles.
Despite the official government job description, Dock spent a considerable amount of his time getting the Colonel, Sam Tanner, out of trouble (although arguably an equal amount of time getting him in to trouble, as well as being rescued by Deanna.)
Due to a fluke in Vic’s technology, or possibly just government bureaucracy, they always had to go back to 1895 to get paid. Dock has no idea how old he is, or when he’ll get to retire. It is continually 1895.
I am of the opinion that one shouldn't abandon this planet before playing air guitar to Eno's Baby's be on Fire. from Dock Hayward's debriefing with Vic, circa 1973.
