Members,
We need your voice! House Bill 101 is a critical piece of legislation that seeks to raise Alaska’s age of consent to 18, closing a dangerous legal loophole that puts our youth at risk.
Alaska has the highest rate of r**e in the nation and one of the highest rates of child sexual assault. Our current laws allow individuals as young as 16 to legally consent to sexual activity, complicating prosecution for those who prey on vulnerable youth. House Bill 101 will strengthen protections and ensure that young people are not burdened with proving lack of consent in court.
We urge you to take action today! Contact your legislators and express your strong support for House Bill 101. If you need guidance on what to say, feel free to use the drafted testimony below:

Sample Testimony:
“I am calling to express my strong support for House Bill 101, which seeks to raise the age of consent in Alaska to 18. The alarming statistics surrounding sexual violence in our state highlight an urgent need for legislative action to protect our youth from exploitation and abuse.
As noted in the sponsor statement, Alaska has the highest rate of r**e in the United States and one of the highest rates of child sexual assault. The current age of consent law creates a dangerous legal loophole that puts our teenagers at further risk. By allowing individuals as young as 16 to legally consent to sexual activity, we are inadvertently complicating prosecution for those who prey on vulnerable youth.
House Bill 101 is a critical step toward closing this gap and creating a safer environment for all minors in Alaska. By raising the age of consent to 18, we can strengthen protections for young people and ensure that survivors are not burdened with the difficult task of proving lack of consent in court. The inclusion of a close-in-age exemption demonstrates a balanced approach, allowing for consensual relationships among peers while still prioritizing the safety of our youth.
Additionally, aligning Alaska’s laws with those of other states that have successfully implemented similar measures is essential. It sends a clear message that we take the protection of our children seriously and will not tolerate exploitation in any form.
I urge you to support House Bill 101 and work toward a safer future for Alaska’s youth.”

Hey Juneau! Let your voices be heard and VOTE on October 1st!
With multiple elections taking place this fall, it’s easy to get confused about different dates and requirements. Remember that you can always check the CBJ Elections website at bit.ly/JuneauVotes to find accurate information about when, where, and how to vote in the October 1, 2024 CBJ Regular Municipal Election.
A witness signature is not required to vote in CBJ municipal elections. Voters only need to provide their own signature and a personal identifier. Carefully read the instructions on your ballot return envelope or check the Notice of Election (bit.ly/4gpH8pL) for a complete description of how to certify and return your ballot.
You may remember providing a witness signature in the past. Although witness signatures were originally part of CBJ’s vote by mail process, that requirement was removed from the code in 2021. You can read or search the complete elections code online at bit.ly/4gxTYSB.
For questions about CBJ elections, please contact the Municipal Clerk’s Office at [email protected] or (907) 586-5278, option 4.
