Brake Basics & Maintenance
Your brakes are your car’s most important safety system—don’t ignore them! Here’s what you should know:
How Brakes Work:
Most modern cars use disc brakes with a caliper that squeezes brake pads against a spinning rotor. The friction slows the car down. Some vehicles still use drum brakes on the rear wheels.
Signs You Need Brake Service:
• Squealing or grinding noises
• Vibration when braking
• Longer stopping distances
• Brake warning light
• Soft or spongy brake pedal
Maintenance Tips:
• Check brake pads every 10,000–15,000 miles
• Replace pads when they’re below 3–4mm thick
• Change brake fluid every 2–3 years to prevent corrosion and fade
• Inspect rotors for grooves, warping, or cracks
Your car might go fast—but it has to stop safely. Regular brake checks can save your life.

What is a Differential (and Why Should You Care)?
When your car turns, the wheels on the outside of the turn have to travel farther than the wheels on the inside. If all your wheels were forced to spin at the same speed, your tires would skid, your turns would be rough, and parts would wear out fast.
That’s where the differential comes in.
It’s a mechanical device that lives between your drive wheels (usually in the rear or front axle, depending on your vehicle). Its job? To split the engine’s power and send it to the wheels at different speeds when needed—especially while turning.
Without it, driving would feel clunky, noisy, and downright unsafe.
Caring for a car’s differential is pretty straightforward, and doing so can save you from expensive repairs later. Here’s how to take care of it:
1. Check & Change Differential Fluid
• Just like your engine, the differential uses oil (gear oil) to stay lubricated.
• Check the fluid every 15,000 - 30,000 miles (your owner’s manual may give exact intervals).
• Change the fluid if it’s dirty, burnt-smelling, or low. Dirty fluid can’t protect the gears well and can lead to damage.
2. Look for Leaks
• If you see oil around the differential housing or on the ground under your car, it might be leaking gear oil.
• Leaks often come from worn seals or gaskets, and catching them early is key.
3. Listen for Noises
• A whining, grinding, or howling noise from the rear (or front, for front-wheel drive) while turning or accelerating could mean the differential is wearing out or low on fluid.
4. Don’t Ignore Vibrations
• Vibrations while driving could mean the differential is misaligned or there’s an issue with the driveshaft or U-joints.
5. Avoid Excessive Loads
• Towing heavy stuff or driving aggressively with worn tires can put extra stress on the differential. Be mindful of how you drive and what you haul.
