Good Reason Houston

What does it take to keep a child on track for a good-paying career? It starts before they ever set foot in a kindergarten classroom.
Last week, we brought our partner districts together for our PreK convening — a room full of educators and leaders committed to getting the earliest years right.
Here's what made it worth gathering for:
We celebrated real progress in early learning happening across the Houston region
Districts shared the PreK practices already working in their classrooms
We strengthened the partnerships that make this work possible
Together, we mapped out next steps to expand PreK access and enrollment
The big idea behind it all: early learning is the first link in a long chain. Strong PreK builds the reading, math, and social foundations kids carry through every grade that follows — all the way to graduation and beyond.
That's the thread of our July focus, connecting the dots from PreK to high school. And it ladders up to the goal that drives us: doubling the rate of public school graduates earning a living wage by 2040.
When districts learn from one another, more Houston kids get the start they deserve.
To our partner districts — thank you for showing up and digging in. This is what collaboration for our community looks like.
What's one early learning win you've seen in your community lately? We'd love to hear it.
Think back to the teacher who changed everything for you. 💛
Maybe they believed in you before you believed in yourself. Maybe they made the classroom feel like home.
Drop their name in the comments. Let’s give Houston’s teachers the shout-out they deserve.

Houston students just set a new reading record! 🎉
For the second year in a row, our 3rd–8th graders pushed their own record higher. This year, 52% are meeting grade level standards in reading. Nearly 6 in 10 eighth graders are reading on grade level, up from fewer than half in 2019.
This is the result of real work by real people: teachers, school leaders, and communities across Houston who refused to accept the status quo.

Houston parents don’t need to be convinced Pre-K matters. They already know.
New research with 917 Houston families reveals the enrollment gap isn’t about persuasion — it’s about confidence.
When families feel welcomed, when they trust their child will be safe, when they see evidence of quality learning, enrollment follows.
One parent told us: “If I’m not feeling welcome, I’m finding other options.”
Another drives 40 minutes because of how a school makes them feel.
The solution? Show families. Don’t just tell them.

The 2026 STAAR high school results are in, and the trend lines are pointing up. Our Director of Research and Data, Patrick Gill, shared what stood out with the Houston Chronicle.
The headline win: across our region, English I and II scores are now at their highest levels ever — reversing last year's declines.
And Spring ISD? A 16-point jump in Algebra I, leading the region in growth. 🙌
That's not luck. That's what happens when districts focus on what works for students.
