Global News: UNITED KINGDOM Referendum

The United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union (EU), 23June16. The European Union - often known as the EU - is an economic and political partnership involving 28 European countries. Click to view the EU country list: http://europa.eu/about-eu/countries/index_en.htm

At this time, there is no immediate impact to travelers or businesses. EU law states a country must activate Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which will initiate the transition period of a minimum of two years during which an exit strategy will be negotiated. Throughout the transition, the U.K. will continue to obey the EU laws.

IMMIGRATION & FREE MOVEMENT IMPACTS:

UK NATIONALS WORKING IN EU COUNTRIES' OPTIONS:
o If it remains within the single market, it would almost certainly retain free movement rights, allowing UK citizens to work in the EU and vice versa.
o If the government opted to impose work permit restrictions, as UKIP wants, then other countries could reciprocate, meaning British nationals would have to apply for visas to work.

VISA PROCESSING:
o Post transition, UK nationals are expected to require visas, work and resident permits throughout EU countries. Travelers and business owners will be impacted by revised immigration procedures, cost and requirements.

Total Visa Solutions will continue to provide updates on the UK Referendum: Immigration and Visa policies as developed. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email your dedicated TVS Consultant at +1 713.623.0211

U.S. To Withhold Passports If You Owe Back Taxes
Source - Cheryl Rosen / travelmarketreport / November 24, 2015

If you owe the IRS more than $50,000, you’d better renew your passport right now. A new bill that has passed both houses of Congress is likely to include a provision that will prevent “serious debtors” of the IRS from getting or renewing passports starting in January.

H.R.22 is in conference, Forbes reported yesterday, “so something could change. But it is expected to pass.”
If it does, new section 7345 of the tax code, “Revocation or Denial of Passport in Case of Certain Tax Delinquencies,” will allow the State Department to block Americans with “seriously delinquent” tax debts from obtaining or renewing a passport.

IRSMedic.com also noted that this “sure bill to be passed into law” which is “likely to hit the President’s desk before Thanksgiving” even allows the State Department to revoke existing passports.
Both articles note that the IRS will use a threshold of $50,000 of unpaid federal taxes, penalties, and interest—a number that can quickly add up.

The IRS and State department did not respond to calls from TMR by press time.
