Meet Ranger! Ranger is a 2-year-old male Golden Retriever who came to our animal ER because his face was swollen! Ranger’s dad explained that he took him on a field trip to the farm where something may have bitten him.

Our veterinarian noticed a small puncture wound with dried blood on Ranger’s muzzle. We recommended blood work to eliminate the possibility of snake envenomation.

The bloodwork came back abnormal, consistent with pit viper snake envenomation. We immediately gave Ranger antivenom. He began to improve after the antivenom treatment but stayed overnight so we could continue supportive care and monitor his bloodwork.

Ranger’s repeat bloodwork was returning to normal so he was able to go home! He should continue to improve everyday but his dad was told to bring him back if he noticed anything concerning.

Pit viper venom is a powerful cocktail of toxins and enzymes that can quickly damage tissue, affect blood clotting, cause swelling and pain, and in serious cases impact muscles, nerves, the heart, and other body systems.
