Kevin Saunders

A state champion in track for Wichita Southeast High School, Laverne Smith went onto stardom on the track and gridiron at Kansas Jayhawks. He still owns the 100-yard-dash record and was the career rushing leader for the Jayhawk football program when he graduated. You might also remember he was in the backfield with Nolan Cromwell, Billy Campfield and Jerome Nelloms when KU upset Oklahoma 23-3 in Norman, giving Sooner head coach Barry Switzer his first loss.
